About

Backgammon is a race game played on a board of 24 narrow triangles (points). Each player has 15 pieces moving in opposite directions, trying to bear all pieces off the board first. Movement is determined by dice rolls, but the skill lies in how you use those rolls — blocking, hitting, and racing efficiently are all distinct strategies.

The game rewards probabilistic thinking. You must constantly evaluate odds: what are the chances of rolling to cover a specific point? What numbers hit your blot? The doubling cube adds a financial/competitive dimension — offering or accepting a double is a calculated risk based on current game state.

Backgammon is one of the oldest known board games and is uniquely well-suited to quick break play. Games last 10–20 minutes and are complete in themselves, with clear momentum swings and a definitive ending.

How to Play

  • Roll two dice and move your pieces (checkers) the indicated number of points in your direction.
  • Dice can be split across two pieces or used fully on one piece if the destinations are open.
  • A point occupied by two or more of your pieces is "made" — opponents cannot land there.
  • A single piece (blot) can be hit by the opponent and sent to the bar; it must re-enter before other moves.
  • Bear off all 15 pieces from the home board to win.

Tips

  • Make points in your home board early — they restrict where opponents can re-enter.
  • Avoid leaving blots in your opponent's home board when they have pieces on the bar.
  • The golden point (opponent's 5-point) is the most strategically valuable position to hold.

History

Backgammon has been played for over 5,000 years, with boards found in ancient Mesopotamia and Iran. Roman Emperor Claudius reportedly wrote a book about it. The modern layout was standardized in England around the 17th century. The doubling cube was introduced in the 1920s in New York. In 1979, backgammon software first defeated world champions, and modern engines like GNU Backgammon play at superhuman level.
