About

Blackjack is the casino card game with the best odds for the player — with perfect strategy, the house edge drops below 0.5%. The goal is to build a hand closer to 21 than the dealer without going over (busting). Face cards count as 10; aces count as 1 or 11. Decisions are simple: hit, stand, double down, split, or surrender.

The optimal play for every situation is mathematically determined and fits on a wallet-sized strategy card. Memorizing basic strategy transforms Blackjack from a guessing game to a skill-based one. Card counting — tracking the ratio of high to low cards remaining — was the historical path to player advantage, now countered by casino countermeasures.

Browser blackjack is the ideal way to learn and practice strategy without financial stakes. Each hand takes 30 seconds; you can play 20 hands in a short break.

How to Play

  • Place your bet, then receive two cards face-up; the dealer takes one face-up and one face-down.
  • Hit to receive another card; stand to keep your current total.
  • Double Down: double your bet and receive exactly one more card.
  • Split: if you have two cards of the same rank, split them into two separate hands.
  • Beat the dealer's total without exceeding 21 to win; ties (push) return your bet.

Tips

  • Always split Aces and 8s; never split 10s or 5s.
  • Double down on 11 against any dealer card; on 10 against dealer 2–9.
  • Never take insurance — it's a side bet with poor odds regardless of your hand.

History

Blackjack descended from European card games including Vingt-et-Un (Twenty-One), popular in French casinos in the 1700s. The American casino bonus that paid 3:2 for a black jack with an ace gave the game its name. Edward Thorp's 1962 book "Beat the Dealer" proved card counting was possible, revolutionizing both player strategy and casino countermeasures. Blackjack remains the most widely played casino table game worldwide.
