About

Bridge is arguably the world's most sophisticated card game. Four players in two partnerships bid to win a number of tricks with a trump suit, then play to fulfill (or defeat) the final contract. The bidding system is itself a complex language of inference — communicating hand strength and suit distribution to your partner without showing your cards.

What makes Bridge extraordinary is the density of skill involved. Declarer play, defender play, and the bidding system each represent years of study. Yet even beginners can enjoy the basic structure: bid what you think you can make, play to achieve it.

Online Bridge compresses the setup and scoring into instant feedback, making it accessible for a longer break session. A single hand of 4-player bridge takes 5–10 minutes.

How to Play

  • The dealer deals 13 cards to each of four players seated North/South/East/West.
  • Players bid in turn, stating how many tricks (above 6) they expect their partnership to win and in which suit (or no-trump).
  • The highest bidder becomes declarer; their partnership must win at least the contracted number of tricks.
  • Dummy (declarer's partner) lays their hand face-up on the table for declarer to play.
  • Play 13 tricks; the side that fulfills or defeats the contract scores accordingly.

Tips

  • In bidding, show your longest and strongest suit first.
  • As declarer, count your sure winners before playing to the first trick.
  • Defenders should lead the top of a sequence (K from KQJ) to build tricks safely.

History

Bridge evolved from Whist through a series of variants (Biritch, Auction Bridge) before Contract Bridge was formalized by Harold Vanderbilt in 1925 during a cruise. It spread rapidly through country clubs and became the dominant card game of the 20th century among serious players. The World Bridge Federation holds official championships; Bridge is one of the few card games recognized by the International Olympic Committee as a mind sport.
