About

Digger is a classic 1983 arcade game originally developed for the IBM PC. You control a small mining machine, tunneling through underground earth to collect gems and bags of gold while being chased by Nobbins and Hobbins — relentless enemies that grow more aggressive over time.

The gameplay loop is simple but endlessly tense. You dig paths through the dirt, collect gems for points, and can release falling gold bags to crush enemies. The twist is that the earth doesn't regenerate — your tunnels are permanent, and a misplaced dig can leave you trapped or give enemies a shortcut to your position.

It's the perfect quick-session game. Each life is short, the stakes are immediate, and the maps are small enough to internalize after a few plays. It rewards spatial awareness and quick thinking in equal measure.

How to Play

  • Use arrow keys to move and dig through the underground earth.
  • Collect gems scattered throughout the tunnels for points.
  • Avoid Nobbins and Hobbins — contact with them costs a life.
  • Position yourself under gold bags and move away quickly to drop them on enemies.
  • Clear all gems or eliminate all enemies to complete the level.

Tips

  • Plan your tunnel network — dead ends can trap you with no escape route.
  • Gold bags fall only if unsupported; you can use this to set traps for enemies.
  • Nobbins turn into faster Hobbins if they aren't eliminated quickly.

History

Digger was created by Windmill Software in 1983 and became one of the most pirated PC games of its era, spreading widely through floppy disk sharing. It drew inspiration from Dig Dug (1982) by Namco but had its own distinct mechanics and PC-native feel. The original source code was later released, and the game has been faithfully preserved by fan communities. It holds a special place in early PC gaming history as one of the first successful action games built specifically for the IBM PC.
