About

Donkey Kong is one of arcade gaming's foundational platform games. You play as Jumpman (later Mario), climbing ladders and jumping over rolling barrels and bouncing fireballs to rescue Pauline from the giant ape at the top of a construction site. Each screen is a distinct layout of platforms and hazards that must be navigated with precise timing.

The game introduced the concept of a character with a personal narrative — a clear story, a villain with personality, and a rescue objective. That context gave Donkey Kong an emotional hook that pure abstract games lacked, and it changed how arcade games were designed afterward.

Donkey Kong is challenging and unforgiving, but short enough to replay constantly. Each life is a 30–90 second sprint; a full credit lasts 5–15 minutes and leaves you wanting to try the one move you kept getting wrong.

How to Play

  • Use left/right arrows to run and the jump button to leap over hazards.
  • Climb ladders to reach higher platforms.
  • Avoid barrels Donkey Kong throws — jump over them or dodge left/right.
  • Collect hats, parasols, and purses for bonus points.
  • Reach Pauline at the top to complete the screen.

Tips

  • Jump barrels early — jumping too late leaves no room for error.
  • The hammer power-up destroys barrels but prevents ladder climbing — use it in open areas.
  • Time your ladder climbs — barrels can follow you down.

History

Donkey Kong was designed by Shigeru Miyamoto and released by Nintendo in 1981. It was Nintendo's first major international hit and introduced Mario (then called Jumpman) to the world. The game saved Nintendo of America from financial difficulty after a disastrous import of Radar Scope units. A famous 1984 lawsuit by Universal Studios claiming ownership of "Kong" failed, and the case became a landmark in intellectual property law.
