About

Hextris is a hexagonal twist on Tetris. A hexagon sits at the center, and colored blocks fall inward from six directions. Rotate the central hexagon to direct blocks to specific sides, and match three or more same-colored blocks in a connected row to clear them. The game escalates rapidly in speed.

The key difference from classic Tetris is the radial geometry. You're thinking in six directions rather than two, and blocks stack on curved surfaces rather than a flat floor. Rotation is your primary tool — spin the hexagon to position incoming blocks and set up chain clears.

Hextris rewards fast reflexes and spatial thinking. Chain reactions — where cleared blocks reveal more matches below — provide huge score bonuses. The game is over in minutes but the urge to beat your high score keeps you coming back.

How to Play

  • Use left/right arrow keys (or A/D) to rotate the central hexagon.
  • Colored blocks fall inward from six directions toward the hexagon.
  • Match 3+ same-colored blocks touching the hexagon edge to clear them.
  • Cleared blocks may cause further matches (combos) for bonus points.
  • The game ends when blocks stack past the outer boundary.

Tips

  • Focus on one or two sides rather than trying to manage all six equally.
  • Set up combo chains by clearing blocks that will drop others into position.
  • Rotate in small increments to sort multiple incoming colors quickly.

History

Hextris was created as an open-source project and became a popular browser game around 2014. It emerged from the tradition of Tetris variants that explore how the core stacking mechanic changes in non-standard geometries. The hexagonal format had been explored before in commercial games, but Hextris's clean web implementation made it widely accessible. Its open-source codebase has been forked and modified by many developers since.
