History

Monopoly was created by Charles Darrow in the 1930s, though its roots trace back to The Landlord's Game patented by Elizabeth Magie in 1903. It was designed to illustrate the economic concept of land value taxation. Parker Brothers published Monopoly in 1935 and it became one of the best-selling board games of all time.
