About

Plague Inc. flips the script on strategy games: instead of saving the world, you're trying to destroy it. You design and evolve a pathogen — bacteria, virus, fungus, or more exotic types — and watch it spread across a simulated global population. Your goal is total human extinction before a cure is developed.

The strategic depth is remarkable. You spend DNA points to evolve transmission methods, symptoms, and abilities. Push symptoms too hard and humanity panics, closing borders and accelerating cure research. Stay too subtle and your pathogen never reaches critical mass. The balance between stealth and lethality is the game's core tension.

Each playthrough feels different depending on your pathogen type and chosen strategy. Starting in different countries changes everything. It's intellectually stimulating, darkly funny, and surprisingly educational about real epidemiology.

How to Play

  • Choose a pathogen type and a starting country to begin your infection.
  • Earn DNA points as your pathogen infects more people.
  • Spend DNA points to evolve transmission traits, symptoms, and resistances.
  • Balance infectivity with lethality — killing too fast halts your spread.
  • Infect every country and kill all humans before the cure is completed.

Tips

  • Start in a densely populated country like India or China for fastest initial spread.
  • Keep symptoms minimal early — avoid drawing attention before global infection is achieved.
  • Invest in drug resistance and cold/heat resistance to reach isolated regions.

History

Plague Inc. was created by solo developer James Vaughan and released in 2012. It became an instant hit, praised for its blend of strategy and simulation grounded in real epidemiology. The game has been used in academic settings to teach about disease spread. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, it surged to the top of app charts worldwide as people sought to understand how pandemics work. Ndemic Creations subsequently added a "Cure" mode where players work to stop a pandemic rather than cause one.
